The construction industry has argued for some time that there is a need for a single standard for responsibly sourcing building products to assist the specification process. The Code for Sustainable Homes states that developers can achieve points in the building materials category by proving that building products such as windows have been responsibly sourced. Currently, different window materials receive different code points, based on different ‘evidence’ of responsible sourcing. In response to this inconsistency, the BRE has published BES 6001, an Environmental and Sustainability Standard for the responsible sourcing of all construction products. So, while suppliers work to become certified to this new standard, how do local authority specifiers faced with immediate procurement choices select responsibly sourced products?

WHS Halo has developed a free checklist (available in myWHSHalo) to help specifiers select responsibly sourced windows. To request a copy and for further information on WHS Halo’s range of responsibly sourced PVC-U windows and doors, please telephone 0121 749 8181 or complete the contact form.
The new standard provides specifiers with another tool for informing their procurement decisions and while suppliers such as WHS Halo work towards formal certification, specifiers can request proof of the organisational, supply chain, environmental and social aspects highlighted here and feel confident that their chosen windows have been sourced responsibly.
