ISO 14001 is the International Standard for Environmental Management Systems. The EMS assists in the identification of a companies environmental impacts and legal compliance. The company can implement measures to minimise their impact upon the environment and ensure compliance to Environmental Legislation.

ISO 14001: Environmental management system (EMS) has been designed to continually improve environmental performance by following a circular procedure. The formalised EMS procedure addresses issues such as:

• Environmental policy
• Setting of objectives and targets
• Legal requirements
• Developing a management programme
• Documentation
• Emergency procedures
• Monitoring and auditing of the system


The formal title of this standard is BS EN ISO 14001, where BS denotes its adoption as a British standard and EN denotes its adoption as a European standard. ISO 14001 is an international voluntary standard.

Criteria to gain accreditation:

  • Environmental policy - statement by the organisation of its intentions and principles in relation to its overall environmental performance which provides a framework for action and for setting of its environmental objectives and targets.
  • Planning - Legal requirements, objectives, and targets, establishing a management programme.
  • Implementation and Operation - Responsibilities, training, document and operational control and emergency planning.
  • Checking and corrective action - Monitor and measurement, non-conformance and corrective action procedures and Env. management system auditing.
  • Management review - Assess progress against defined policy, objectives, and procedures.
  • Continual improvement.
